Even though Keeley had said ‘while still in Australia’ that she wanted to go to Hungary, she had said a lot of things and I had said ‘yeah, yeah, nah’. That’s the aussie way. But we had been asked to leave my mates offer of accommodation in Paris because WIFI bunny had been poorly behaved and ate all the cables in the apartment and we had to pay the price. I think the bunny was lonely and had gone nuts (COVID much?)

Anyway rescue came in the form of a lady called Cara who hails from East London, (what’r u like?) she is so English and grew up in the real London that they make movies about and sounds like it too, and has the stories to tell.

She escaped the rat race and moved to a sleepy but beautiful village called Kaposhomok, a visually stunning one hour train ride out of the main station in Budapest. Actually I think Cara put Kaposhomok on the map, no seriously, if you google the town her AirBnB comes up and a picture of her permaculture success. Bloody legend. I still talk to Cara regularly but don’t think she had any idea how she saved my day.

Have you ever have a moment where everything has gone to shit and none of your friends were there for you and you ended up relying on some stranger.

That’s me and Cara (I now consider her family).

I saw her advert on a workaway sight and applied immediately.

This was my desperate email to Cara…

I can’t express how desperate we were for some long term opportunity which would give us some time to get back on our feet, work out a plan and get some cash sorted . You see traveling during a global pandemic has its challenges.

Hey Cara,
Thanks for your message, we would love to come, even in a tent. You see the situation in our city of Melbourne is rather bad, people are rioting and it is still in lockdown so we actually have come to the point that we can’t return at this time and obviously doing a workaway is a great way to keep us on the road.

I look forward to hearing from you as i think it sounds perfect as we love all things country, animals working the land and the air and can come as soon as you like.

Luckily for us Cara let us head straight to her place. We did stay in a tent for a night but it was Hungary and coming into winter so we slept with our bags and all our clothes on top of us, the nexte night we moved into the most charming beautiful airBnB room that she had which was not booked due to the pandemic.

The next 4 weeks learning about permaculture, cooking fresh home grown food, foraging for fresh enormous mushrooms and making friends with the neighbours will be one of my fondest memories of our adventure. If you ever head to Hungary, do yourself a favour and stay with Cara in her AirBnB, you won’t regret it and might just gain some new family.

Check her out here…
